Stirring the city. Foodie events in May.

Booze and grub to keep you satiated all month long. I love Vancouver.

BC Spot Prawn Festival (Spot Prawn Boil)
May 5 | 11AM-3PM | $12| False Creek Fishermen’s Wharf | Juicy, plump prawns, I’m salivating just thinking about it. With your ticket you get a plate of fresh-off-the-boat BC Spot Prawns, accompanied by sides, sauces and Terra Breads baked goods to mop it all up! Not only that but you get entrance into the food, wine, and beer tent, featuring pours from Mogiana Coffee, R&B Brewing, and Ganton & Larsen Prospect Winery. A ridiculous deal, it’s no surprise it’s sold out already!
EPIC: The Vancouver Sustainable Living Expo
May 11–13| $15/23 | Vancouver Convention Centre | Learn about environmentally-friendly products and companies, attend lectures, and see green-living exhibits. Let’s not forget that there is an Epicurean centre and tons of samples of food, coffee and even beer throughout the room. All fair trade of course! I went every day last year and loved every minute of it. Take a moment to talk to some of the vendors, they’re incredible people.
Slice of Life: Shorts Program – Doxa Documentary Film Festival
May 12 | 2PM | $12 | Pacific Cinémathèque | Two great foodie films:

  1. Mistura: The Power of Food – “You are what you eat.” But when it comes to the wildly inventive cuisine of Peru, this chestnut takes on vivid new flavour.
  2. DWYuban (Live Earth) – Preparing for their annual carnival celebration—a dreamy blend of music, food, dance, and fireworks—the village collectively takes the time to express gratitude not for what they can take from the earth, but for everything it generously offers in return.

Wine Tasting with a Social Twist
May 16 | 8-9PM | $30 | Vancouver Urban Winery (55 Dunlevy, Ave, Vancouver) | An evening of wine tasting, tweeting and light canapes. Chef Jeff from Miradoro Restaurant partners with Le Gavroche to create canapes to pair with VUW’s wines. Wines will be brown bagged and it will be up to the guest to figure out what the wines are. Prizes for those who can!
Vancouver Craft Beer Week #VCBW @VCBW

There’s beer, and then there’s craft beer. Stop drinking shitty beer and delve in to the good stuff. Vancouver Craft Beer Week is a good time to start. Explore what’s out there and find details on particular events here. Proost! Salut! Sláinte! Chok dee! Cheers!
Richmond Summer Night Market begins!
May 18-Oct 8 every Friday, Saturday, Sunday | 7PM-12AM Fri/Sat 6-11PM Sun | $Depends how much you eat! | 8351 River Rd, Richmond | With over 1 million visitors every year, be prepared for a sardine-like adventure, but the 80 food booths make it all worthwhile. Not to mention the live entertainment, games and the new addition to the market, farm fresh and hand-made goods.
Pelican Bay Spring Tasting
May 29 | 5-8PM | Free for members (no commitment) | Dockside Restaurant | An evening of wine and tapas; definitely something I’m in to. Appetizers provided courtesy of the culinary team at Dockside Restaurant, wine provided by Coal Harbour Liquor store. And since you’ll be drinking, there’s even a free return shuttle service directly from the Coal Harbour Liquor Store to the Dockside Restaurant on Granville Island starting at 4:45pm and running every 30 minutes. Shoot I’d do it just for that!
