Vancouver International Wine Festival officially commences today!

French culture. French food. French wine. What’s not to love?

As I’ve done for the past two years, I’ll be heading to the Vancouver International Wine Festival (VIWF) once again. This year the region of focus is, you guessed it, France.

France is recognized as being one of the world’s most prolific winemaking nations, famous for its diverse regions, including Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire, Rhône and the South of France. However, rather than highlighting the country’s bold reds and flavorful whites, the Vancouver International Wine Festival’s 36th year will shine light on Champagne, as well as bubbly from around the world. Rare bottles and vintages will be poured during the week-long festival that features wine pairing dinners, seminars, tastings, wine lunches and opportunities to speak with talented winemakers.

The 2014 VIWF, presented by The Vancouver Sun, runs February 24th to March 2nd with tastings being held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West, dinners and lunches held at many of Vancouver’s finest restaurants, and seminars and wine minglers being held at select venues throughout the city. Many of the festival’s events are already sold out, but there are tickets still available for some, so act fast!

This year I will be attending:

VIVE LA VIE
Les Faux Bourgeois | 663 East 15 Ave | Monday, February 24 | 6:30pm – 10:00pm

Vancouver’s ultimate bistro partners with South West France’s ultimate bistro wine. Join Les Faux Bourgeois and Vignobles Brumont’s Alain Brumont at this unique opportunity to experience the region of Madiran and the noble Tannat grape, along with the fun, food and service that makes Les Faux Bourgeois one of the most celebrated French restaurants in the city.

Last year’s dinner that I attended was at CinCin with the Wagner Family of Wine. ]

FRANCE BUBBLY PARTY
Ginger 62 | 1219 Granville Street | Tuesday, February 25 | 9<

Three little words to make your heart sing: France. Bubbly. Party. Nine wine producers from throughout France serving 18 sparkling wines, including Champagnes and Crémants. Food stations featuring charcuterie and cheeses, oysters and lobster rolls, tuna tartare, crab cakes and more. And Faubourg French pastries for dessert. Yum! And did we mention DJ Tyson Villeneuve, a swinging lounge atmosphere, the Eiffel Tower (no, not the real one) and a photo booth where you can tweet your bubbly selfies? Oh, and bacon and caramel popcorn! #FranceBubblyParty.

Last year’s Wine Mingler that I attended was at Boathouse Restaurant in Kits. ]

25 UNDER $25
VCC West, Level 3 | Saturday, March 1 | 5:00-7:00pm

One of the most popular events of the festival, 25 Under $25 highlights a coveted selection of wines punching well above their weight, offering the best quality to price ratio on the market. James Nevison, The Province’s “Wine Guy” and author of the best-selling Had a Glass series of wine guides, handles the hosting duties.

[ Last year I got to know Stuart Henry, Winemaker at Ravenswood Winery.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL TASTING
Vancouver Convention Centre West, Ballroom D | February 27,28 | 7:00 – 10:00pm | March 1 | 3:00 – 5:00pm and 7:00 – 10:00pm

780+ wines
177 wineries
14 countries

If you attend only one of the festival’s 54 events, make it an International Festival Tasting. The Vancouver International Wine Festival is widely regarded as the best consumer wine show on the continent, and the Acura International Festival Tasting Room is the heart of it.
